On the Feldenkrais Method® and other inspiring words for healing and expanded awareness:

awareness-through-movementAwareness Through Movement: Easy-to-Do Health Exercises to Improve Your Posture, Vision, Imagination, and Personal Awareness – Thousands have found renewed health and increased sensory awareness through the Feldenkrais method as explained in Awareness Through Movement. Here is a way for people of every age to integrate physical and mental development into a new, invigorating wholeness. Feldenkrais provides a modern-day, practical program for the perennial ideal of a healthy mind in a healthy body. His down-to-earth method carefully avoids any mystical component and never obliges any pupil to master abstruse theories. Exercises for posture, eyes, imagination, and more will simultaneously build better body habits and focus new dimensions of awareness, self-image, and human potential.

body-awareness-as-healing-therapyBody Awareness as Healing Therapy: The Case of Nora – Body Awareness as Healing Therapy: The Case of Nora is Moshe Feldenkrais’ classic study of his work with Nora, a woman who has suffered a severe stroke and lost her neuromuscular coordination, including the ability to read and write. Feldenkrais uses rational and intuitive approaches to help his student relearn basic motor skills. One can observe here the groundwork of Feldenkrais’ extraordinary insights which became known as the Feldenkrais Method. We follow his detailed descriptions of the trial and error process which led him to see the ingredients that were needed to help Nora reshape her attention, perception, imagination and cognition.

Books on Other Healing Modalities:

The Barefoot Book: 50 Great Reasons to Kick Off Your Shoes by Daniel Howell.  Compelling arguments for how walking barefoot can be healing for not only your feet, but entire body.  (go slowly with the process)

The Bowl of Light: Ancestral Wisdom from a Hawaiian Shamanby Hank Wesselman - As modern interest in indigenous wisdom grows, more and more spiritual seekers are turning to Hawaiian shamanism for its remarkable ability to reveal our inner divinity to us. With The Bowl of Light,, paleoanthropologist Hank Wesselman, PhD, provides a rare glimpse into the heart of this tradition as he unveils the teachings passed down to him from the great Kahuna elder, Hale Makua.

embracing-your-inner-critic

Embracing Your Inner Critic: Turning Self-Criticism into a Creative Asset – by Hal and Sidra Stone.  The inner critic. It whispers, whines, and needles us into place. It checks our thoughts, controls our behavior, and inhibits action. It thinks it is protecting us from being disliked, hurt, or abandoned. Instead, the critical inner voice causes shame, anxiety, depression, exhaustion, and low-self-esteem. It acts as a powerful saboteur of our intimate relationships and is a major contributor to drug and alcohol abuse.  Through examples and exercises, the Stones show us how to recognize the critic, how to avoid or minimize “critic attacks,” and, most important, how the inner critic can become asn intelligent, perceptive, and supportive partner in life.

Great Naturalist Resources, Field Guides and Favorite Reads: (much more coming soon….)

Crow Planet: Essential Wisdom from the Urban Wildernessby Lyanda Haupt - There are more crows now than ever. Their abundance is both a sign of ecological imbalance and a generous opportunity to connect with the animal world. CROW PLANET is a call to experience the wildlife in our midst, reminding us that we don’t have to head to faraway places to encounter “nature.” Even in the cities and suburbs where we live we are surrounded by wildlife such as crows. Through observing them we enhance our appreciation of the world’s natural order, and find our own place in it.  Haupt, a trained naturalist, uses science, scholarly research, myth, and personal observation to draw readers into the “crow stories” that unfold around us every day, culminating in book that transforms the way we experience our neighborhoods and our world.

A Ring of Endless Light: The Austin Family Chronicles, Book 4- a classic for young adults by Madelyn L’Engle. After a tumultuous year in New York City, the Austins are spending the summer on the small island where their grandfather lives. He’s very sick, and watching his condition deteriorate as the summer passes is almost more than Vicky can bear. To complicate matters, she finds herself as the center of attention for three very different boys.  Zachary Grey, the troubled and reckless boy Vicky met last summer, wants her all to himself as he grieves the loss of his mother. Leo Rodney has been just a friend for years, but the tragic loss of his father causes him to turn to Vicky for comfort—and romance. And then there’s Adam Eddington. Adam is only asking Vicky to help with his research on dolphins. But Adam—and the dolphins—may just be what Vicky needs to get through this heartbreaking summer.
