Welcome to Sensing Vitality– writings and podcasts (coming soon) on the Feldenkrais Method®, nature awareness, movement education to enliven the body and soul. I offer private sessions as a Feldenkrais Practitioner in Functional Integration®, classes in Awareness Through Movement® and workshops and retreats in the Seattle area, Woodinville and Whidbey Island.
There is a moment during the day when one can decide who is driving the decisions. Is it a part of your personality driving you from one task to another or is your awareness of the bigger picture present? What makes you feel more alive? What feeds your body and soul? How do you decide?
My time in the woods in a survival settings has taught me alot about these kinds of decisions. Clients who see me for bodywork have often hurt themselves by pushing their body beyond the limits they felt. The mind can urge us to do dangerous and reckless things. ”Just go another mile.” What drives us past our human limits or ignores the flashing lights of our empty gas tank?
Eating too much, drinking too much, exercising and working too much. Or the reverse– a lack of activity. What part of us makes the decisions? A deer in the woods doesn’t run very often at full speed, only if he or she must run. Deer have a careful expenditure of their energy and must protect their legs from unnecessary risk of injury. I’ve noticed how deer walk slowly and pay attention to the birds that chirp back and forth or send an alarm “cheep!” The risk of not attending to this input from the birds, could cost the deer her life. The birds and deer rely on their senses throughout the day and night.
It’s amazing to me how reckless we human beings can be in comparison to the deer. We have been trained to be “one-track-minded” to such a fault that we tune out all kinds of signs that lead us to illness or grave injuries. What are the signs of vitality that lead us to strong health and joyful living?
My writings, photos, podcasts and videos are designed to enrich development of our senses and attention to vitality. These will include Feldenkrais® lessons, Qigong and nature awareness practices I use with clients and for my own health. These lessons and stories apply these practices to real life. I hope you share your stories as well.
Salut! To life! Here’s to sensing vitality!
